Problem: Study

Claim:
If I study hard I can get a better grade.
Grounds:
It is normal for me to learn when I study, I have done this in the past.
Warrant:
A grade is the evaluation of ones knowledge in a certain area.
Backing:
Study makes you learn, therefore know, and therefore get a better grade.
Qualifier:
You can not study every single minute you have, there are other things that are important that demand your time, such as sleep.

  1. Although your argument is correctly crafted with valid reasons, your evidence and explanation are misplaced. I believe that "A grade is the evaluation of one's knowledge in a certain area." should be the ground, "Study makes you learn, thereforeknow, and therefore get a better grade." should be the warrant, and "It is normal for me to learn when I study, I have done this in the past." should be the backing. Additionally, "You can not study every single minute you have, there are other things that are important that demand your time, such as sleep." sounds more similar to a modality rather than a qualifier. Remember,a qualifier is something that states or indicates the robustnesses and the strength of the argument.

  2. The argument is supported by the reasons, but the argument seems weak because your reasons are written in your personal sense instead of the sense of argument.
Therefore, I suggest you to put some universally acknowledged facts.

  3. I think you have the facts right but you haven’t placed them correctly. Your grounds for instance, seem more like backing. I think a better look at the Toulmin’s model may help you figure out exactly what goes under which category.

  4. The claim and argument is valid, however the grounds for instance don't really support your claim. I think if you wrote more on each of the aspects of the Toulmin model, we would get a clearer picture of what you are trying to argue.
